Þórisjökull Glacier
Þórisjökull also (pronounced as θouːrɪs jœːkʏtl) or Thórisjökull Glacier is a word derived from an Old Norse language. This word means “Þóris’s glacier” or “the glacier of Þórr.” The height of the Glacier is around 4,429 feet or 1,350 meters.
You can see this town near the town of Borgarnes. Also, technically, Þórisjökull Glacier is a smaller part of the Langjökull Glacier. Langjökull Glacier itself is the largest glacier in Iceland.
The distance of the Glacier from Reykjavik city is about 73 kilometers( 45 miles).
Another interesting fact about this glacier is that it is a tuya. Tuya means that it is a flat-topped and steep-sided volcano. This makes Þórisjökull Glacier a rare subglacial volcano.
Hengill Geothermal Area
Another important site on this trip is the Hengill volcano. It is a geothermal area found at a distance of about 40 km (25 miles) from Reykjavik. Tourists who explore the Southwest part of Iceland find this active volcano amazing. It is famous for its large number of geysers, mud pools, and hot springs.
The hengill volcanic system is quite intricate, consisting of a central volcano and a ring of smaller volcanoes.
The collision of the European and North American tectonic plates caused the region’s complexity. However, they are currently drifting apart. Nonetheless, it has gone 2,000 years without erupting. The mild geothermal bathing pools in the Hengill geothermal area are a major draw for visitors. They also visit local geothermal power plants to have a better understanding of the renewable energy programs supported by the Icelandic government.
