About Mount Askja
Vatnajokull Glacier National Park is home to Mount Askja (Icelandic for “caldera”). It’s a volcano crater that’s 1,516 meters (4,974 feet) tall and contains a lake that’s 200 meters deep near a circular, white geothermal lake. Dyngjufjoll is home to the renowned Askja.
A caldera measuring 8 kilometers (5 miles) in length and 200 meters (656 feet) in depth, now known as Lake Oskjuvatn, was formed about 10,000 years ago when Mount Askja erupted, causing the roof of the lava chamber to collapse and create the biggest caldera in Iceland. However, its foundation is sinking beneath the waves more and more each day. Askja Mountain is a volcano that has erupted multiple times in the past, each time with devastating effects. Among Iceland’s active volcanoes, it quickly rose to prominence. About 0.1 km of lava erupted during the last significant eruption, which occurred in 1961. However, its foundation is sinking beneath the waves more and more each day.
