1. Reykjavík – Private Hotel Pickup

Your private Jökulsárlón tour from Reykjavík begins with pickup from your hotel or accommodation. Meet your driver-guide and settle into your private vehicle before travelling east along Iceland’s famous Route 1 Ring Road. As Reykjavík disappears behind you, the landscape gradually changes into open farmland, volcanic terrain, waterfalls, mountains, glaciers and the wide black-sand plains of South Iceland. Because this is a private tour, reasonable comfort, restroom and photography stops can be included throughout the journey.

2. Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Before reaching Jökulsárlón, visit Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon, one of the Vatnajökull region’s beautiful and often quieter glacier lagoons. Fjallsárlón lies beneath the dramatic Fjallsjökull glacier tongue, part of the enormous Vatnajökull ice cap. Icebergs can often be seen floating across the lagoon while glacier-covered mountains create an impressive natural backdrop. Located only around 10 kilometres from Jökulsárlón, Fjallsárlón provides a different perspective on Iceland’s glacial landscape and makes it possible to experience two distinctive glacier lagoons during the same private tour. Take time to enjoy the scenery, walk near the lagoon and capture photographs before continuing toward Jökulsárlón.

3. Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

The main highlight of the tour is Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, one of Iceland’s most famous natural attractions. The lagoon sits beside Breiðamerkurjökull, an outlet glacier connected to the Vatnajökull ice cap. As pieces of ice break away from the glacier, they enter the lagoon and slowly drift toward the Atlantic Ocean. Icebergs can appear in different shapes and shades of white, blue and volcanic grey, making the scenery different every time you visit. You will have time to walk beside the lagoon, enjoy the surrounding landscape and photograph the floating ice. Seals are also frequently found in the area, although wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed. 4. Optional Jökulsárlón Boat Tour

Guests can choose to add a seasonal boat tour on Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, subject to weather, operating dates and availability. A boat experience provides a different perspective of the lagoon and allows visitors to travel closer to the floating ice formations than is possible from the shoreline. Boat tour tickets are not included in the standard private tour price and should ideally be arranged in advance, especially during the busy summer travel season. Please let us know when booking if you would like to include a boat experience, as adding an activity may affect the amount of time available for other South Coast sightseeing stops during the day.

5. Diamond Beach

Just across the road from Jökulsárlón lies Diamond Beach, one of the South Coast’s most distinctive landscapes. Ice that travels from the glacier lagoon toward the Atlantic can sometimes wash back onto the black volcanic shoreline, creating a dramatic contrast between transparent glacial ice, dark sand and ocean waves. The amount, size and location of ice on the beach changes naturally with tides, weather and conditions, which means every visit can look different. Take time to walk along the shoreline and photograph this constantly changing meeting point between Vatnajökull’s glacial ice and the North Atlantic Ocean.

Additional South Coast Stops

The primary purpose of this private tour is to experience Fjallsárlón, Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach. Because this is a long journey from Reykjavík, additional stops are planned according to available daylight, weather, road conditions and the pace of your group.

6. Stjórnarfoss Waterfall

When time and conditions allow, stop at Stjórnarfoss, a picturesque waterfall near Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Its quieter surroundings make it a pleasant place to stretch your legs and enjoy another side of Iceland’s South Coast away from some of the region’s busiest attractions.

7. Vík í Mýrdal & Reynisdrangar

Your route passes through Vík í Mýrdal, an important stop along the journey between Reykjavík and Jökulsárlón. Depending on the day’s schedule, you may stop in or around Vík for refreshments, a comfort break or views toward the distinctive Reynisdrangar sea stacks rising from the Atlantic Ocean.

8. Seljalandsfoss Waterfall

When daylight and timing allow, your journey may include Seljalandsfoss, one of Iceland’s best-known waterfalls. The waterfall drops approximately 60 metres from a former sea cliff. During suitable seasonal and safety conditions, a pathway allows visitors to walk partly behind the falling water. Waterproof clothing is strongly recommended if you plan to approach the waterfall closely.
