Tour Plan
Mýrdalsjökull glacier
Mýrdalsjökull is a mighty glacier located in the southern part of Iceland. Its name translates to “mire dale glacier,” and it covers an area of over 595 square miles. This glacier is home to the highly active and long-overdue Katla volcano, which adds to its already striking features. The ice cap of Mýrdalsjökull glacier is known to be moving slowly, covering some of Iceland’s most breathtaking ice caves and stunning landscapes. Visitors to this region can embark on guided tours and hike across the glacier, exploring its incredible natural beauty and learning about the history and geology of this unique area. Mýrdalsjökull glacier is a must-see destination for those seeking an adventure amidst Iceland’s natural wonders.
More about the tour
After being picked up, our journey towards the glaciers begins, with a quick stop at a gas station where snacks and drinks can be purchased. While we start on the famous Road 1, we will soon turn onto a secluded path, immersed in stunning glaciers and mountains. Even though the Super Jeep can handle the rough terrain, the drive promises to be a thrilling experience.
We will reach a stop near the base of the Kötlujökull glacier, where an otherworldly view will greet us. After strapping on our crampons and helmets, we will take a brief walk to the ice cave’s entrance. Depending on the tour and the ever-changing natural ice cave, we may need to climb some steps using ladders. These steps are not physically demanding, however, and are easily accessible to those with average physical fitness.
As we approach the cave, beautiful layers of variously colored ice and volcanic ash reveal themselves, creating impressive stripes in the glacier’s surface. Our knowledgeable guide will provide fascinating insights into the glacier’s history, the ice cave, and the surrounding area, making this tour an educational and exciting experience.
Additional Information
If weather permits from February 1st to November 15th, we will visit some of Iceland’s most magnificent waterfalls. Skógafoss waterfall, located in the Skógar area, is our first stop, known for inspiring numerous folklore tales. Hiking up the right side of the waterfall provides a view of the troll’s face, turned to stone while admiring Skógafoss. We will also visit Seljalandsfoss, a stunning year-round waterfall located on the Seljalands River, with the unique feature of walking behind it. The river originates from the famous volcano, Eyjafjallajökull.
Important information
- On this tour, we are only able to stop at both Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls from February 1st to November 15th due to limited daylight periods. Unfortunately, we cannot stop at Skógafoss during winter, from November 16th to January 31st.
- It is imperative to bring warm clothing for this tour! Please ensure that you pack warm and waterproof attire, including warm headwear, gloves, and sturdy shoes, as rental clothing options are not available.
