About the Tour
Your adventure begins at the designated meeting point near Skaftafell (detailed information provided below). Arrive 20 minutes before departure to meet your highly qualified glacier guide. Upon arrival, your guide will equip you with all necessary gear, including crampons, a helmet, an ice axe, and, if needed, footwear and rainwear. Once everyone is geared up, you’ll embark on your journey towards the glacier.
The walk to the glacier takes about 20 minutes due to the extensive melted ice. Along the way, you’ll observe how the ice has reshaped the bedrock, see the moss line on the surrounding mountains indicating where the ice once was, and pass a lagoon with the last remnants of melted ice. Upon reaching the glacier, your guide will teach you how to walk on ice and provide a quick safety briefing before starting your hike on the enchanting Falljökull Glacier, one of the most magical and mysterious outlets of the Vatnajökull Glacier.
The Falljökull outlet stands out due to its dramatically carved glacier landscapes, which you’ll explore during the 3-hour hike. Your guide will lead you to the most breathtaking parts of the glacier, including crevasses, moulins, glacier mice (a type of moss), and massive icefalls.
What To Wear
Weather in Iceland is very unpredictable. For tours during winter: warm clothing as first layer, waterproof outdoor jacket and pants, hiking boots with high ankle protection, a hat and gloves are ideal. For tours during summer, bringing a light rain jacket and pants is in most cases enough protection. Icelanders often say, “If you don’t like the weather, just wait 5 minutes”. Jeans are not recommended for outdoor trips as they become very heavy and cold when they get wet.
