Tour Plan
Day 1
We will begin our tour at 8 am in Reykjavík. Once we all get on the minibus, we’re going towards Snaefellsnes, a really pretty place with lots of volcanoes in western Iceland.
Ytri Tunga Beach And Seal Colony
Ytri-Tunga is a beach with sand where you can find a seal colony hidden behind the farmhouses near the sea. Seals really enjoy hanging out on the rocks at this pretty beach. These animals are friendly and curious. They will climb up on the rocks so that you can see them from far away.
Búdakirkja: The Black Church Of Búdir
There’s a village on the south coast of the peninsula that has only a hotel, and a small black church called the Búðakirkja. The church is surrounded by a field of lava rocks. Búdakirkja was built in 1703 and then rebuilt in 1987 because one member wanted it back. The place has an old cemetery and a bell and cup from when it was built. The National Museum of Iceland owns the building, but the Búdir parish takes care of it because it’s a listed building. This chapel looks really pretty and romantic, and it’s definitely a highlight of the site.
Arnarstapi Fishing Village
This small fishing town has beautiful cliffs along the coast that were formed when hot lava met the rough waves of the Atlantic Ocean. In Iceland, people consider it the most beautiful harbor in the country. After many years, the rocks have been worn away by natural forces, and now there are pretty stone arches and an impressive water spout in the ocean. Take a stroll by the coast with a guide who will tell you about Bárður, a creature who was half-man and half-troll, and the bad things he did in that region.
Lóndrangar And Basalt Cliffs
The Lóndrangar are two tall rocks in Iceland that were left behind after a bigger crater wore down over time. There are some really tall rocks called Londrangar on the southern coast that you can’t miss. They are made of basalt and are 75 meters high. They have many different types of birds that live by the sea, like northern fulmars and puffins, among others.
Djúpalónssandur
There is a beach in Iceland with black sand and rocks where fishermen have been going for centuries to catch fish in the Atlantic Ocean. Even today, we can still find the “lifting stones” that old-time fishermen used to check their strength and show that they were tough enough for the physically demanding job of rowboat fishing in the Atlantic. You can give it a shot and try to lift them on your own! In 1948, a British fishing boat got stuck on the sandy reefs of Djúpalónssandur. Five guys died, while 14 were saved by the local rescue teams. The shipwreck is still on the beach as a spooky reminder of how strong nature can be.
Saxhóll Volcanic Crater
This volcano crater was created more than 4,000 years ago. Now, you can climb it using an iron staircase. The hike is not very difficult, and you can see all around the lava fields. You can also see the Snaefellsjökull glacier in the distance.
The Church Mountain- Kirkjufell And Kirkjufellsfoss Waterfall
This famous skinny mountain has become the symbol of Snaefellsnes lately. It got famous after being shown as the “Arrowhead Mountain” on Game of Thrones. This mountain got its shape from the glaciers that wore it down during the last ice age around 12,000 years ago. This mountain in Iceland looks really cool, and a lot of people take pictures of it. There’s also a pretty waterfall called Kirkjufellsfoss nearby that makes for a great photo of the mountain. There are many good spots to take a great photo.
Day 2
On our second day, we will drive a little to the East to explore the most visited route in Iceland – the Golden Circle.
Geysir Geothermal Area
The Geysir hot springs have many pretty colors. There’s a geyser called Strokkur that shoots up hot water every 5 minutes, reaching heights of up to 35 meters. It got its name from the first hot spring that used to erupt called “Geysir.” This is where all the geysers in the world got their name from, but it doesn’t erupt anymore.
Gullfoss Waterfall
The water that melts from Iceland’s second largest glacier, Langjökull, flows into a deep canyon and creates the beautiful “Golden Falls.” On a sunny day, you can see a big glacier called Langjokull far away and see a rainbow in the midst of a waterfall. It’s a great spot to take a photo!
Thingvellir National Park
We go to the spot where two big pieces of the Earth’s crust, the North American and the Eurasian plates, are spreading apart. There aren’t many places in the world where you can see this big natural event as well as you can here. The largest lake in Iceland is at Thingvellir National Park and has many different types of fish and birds. Thingvellir is a significant spot in Icelandic history. It’s where Icelanders established their parliament in 930 AD, and the chieftains would gather there every summer for their annual meeting. Thingvellir means the place where the parliament used to meet.
Day 3
We are heading to Iceland’s second most popular route, the South Coast. You will find lots of waterfalls, black sand beaches, and glaciers in southern Iceland!
Seljalandsfoss Waterfall
When you get there, you will see the impressive Seljalandsfoss waterfall. If you bring a raincoat, you can easily hike behind the falls. Wow, the waterfall looks amazing, and the ground is shaking from its power. It would make a great photo!
Skógafoss Waterfall
Skogafoss Waterfall is a beautiful waterfall located in Iceland.
If you go further towards the east of the coast, you will come across Skógafoss waterfall. Skógafoss is a really beautiful waterfall. It’s in a small canyon, and the Skógá River falls 60 meters down before flowing towards the Atlantic Ocean. There’s a staircase next to the gorge that leads to a shelf above the waterfall where you can see amazing views.
Glacier Hike In Skaftafell
We will go for a walk on a glacier that comes from the biggest glacier in the country, Vatnajökull. It was an amazing experience and a chance to learn more about this beautiful natural wonder. Lots of popular TV shows and movies, like Game of Thrones, have been filmed in the Skaftafell area.
Day 4
Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon
Jökulsárlón is a really deep lagoon filled with water from a melting glacier called Breiðamerkurjökull. This glacier is part of Europe’s biggest glacier, Vatnajökull. Big ice chunks fall from Breiðamerkurjökull all the time, so the lagoon is usually full of ice that floats to the south.
Diamond Beach
Across the street, the ice chunks from Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon drift into the Atlantic Ocean and then get pushed back to the shore by the tide and wind. This beach has black sand and lots of small ice blocks in different shapes and sizes that shine like diamonds in the sun. The ice looks really pretty, with different shades of white and blue that make a nice contrast. Later, we’ll take you on a really cool boat ride at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. You’ll get to see the icebergs up close, and it’ll be a really memorable experience!
Reynisfjara: Black Sand Beach
We go to Reynisfjara’s Black Sand Beach, where the big waves from the Atlantic Ocean crash against the cool basalt columns on the cliffs above the sand. You can see the cliffs of Dýrhólaey far away. If you love birds, you will be happy to know that this part of the southern region is a great place to spot them. During the summer, you can see puffins, razorbills, and many other types of birds nesting on the cliffs.
Back To Reykjavík
We will be heading back to Reykjavik and should get there around 8 pm, but that could change if the weather or road conditions aren’t good.
