This 9-day tour offers the ultimate Icelandic experience. You’ll spend the first three days discovering the country’s stunning highlands, including the colorful landscapes of Landmannalaugar, exploring unique lava fields, and getting up close to majestic volcanoes. On day four, your journey continues as you begin exploring Iceland’s famous Ring Road.

Day 1 – Vestmannaeyjar Islands

Your adventure begins with a morning pick-up in Reykjavík, followed by a scenic drive to Landeyjarhöfn harbor in southern Iceland. From there, a 30-minute ferry ride takes you to the Vestmannaeyjar Islands, where you’ll head straight to Stórhöfði Cape for a chance to observe the island’s Atlantic puffin colony.

Next, you’ll visit the Eldheimar Museum, dedicated to the 1973 volcanic eruption that led to the island’s evacuation. Afterward, you can choose to hike up Mt. Eldfell Volcano or explore the town before returning to the mainland in the afternoon.

Back on the mainland, the journey continues along Iceland’s south coast, offering views of the coastline and the infamous Eyjafjallajökull Volcano. A stop in the coastal village of Vík allows time to explore the village or visit the black sand beach. The day concludes with a drive through the Eldhraun lava fields to your overnight accommodation

Day 2 – Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon, Laki and Lakagígar

After breakfast, your adventure begins at the enchanting Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon, a natural masterpiece that resembles a scene from a fairytale. After exploring the canyon, the journey ventures into the less-traveled region of Laki and Lakagígar, part of the UNESCO-listed Vatnajökull National Park. A hike to the summit of Mt. Laki offers panoramic views of the Lakagígar craters, formed during a massive volcanic eruption in 1783-1784. This historic event is believed to have triggered a famine in Europe, contributing to the French Revolution.

The journey continues with a scenic drive through the highlands, punctuated by short stops, before returning to the main road. A visit to the charming village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur provides time to explore attractions like Systrafoss Waterfall, Systrastapi Rock, and the unique basalt columns of Kirkjugólf (Church Floor).

Day 3 – Eldgjá Canyon, Ófærufoss Waterfall, Landmannalaugar

After breakfast and checking out, the journey back to Reykjavík takes an exciting detour along the scenic F road, known as Fjallabaksleið nyrðri. The first stop is the awe-inspiring Eldgjá Canyon, the world’s largest volcanic canyon, part of the same volcanic system as Katla. Here, you’ll embark on a hike through the canyon, exploring the majestic Ófærufoss Waterfall.

Next, the adventure continues to Landmannalaugar, a true gem of the highlands. You’ll have the opportunity to explore the unique Laugahraun lava field, hike to the colorful Mt. Brennisteinsalda, and even soak in a natural geothermal pool.

After a couple of hours in Landmannalaugar, the journey resumes towards Reykjavík, with a final stop at the picturesque Hjálparfoss Waterfall in Þjórsárdalur Valley before reaching the city.

Day 4 – Golden Circle & South Coast

Following breakfast and hotel check-out, the return to Reykjavík takes a scenic detour along the Fjallabaksleið nyrðri, a rugged F road. The first stop is the impressive Eldgjá Canyon, the world’s largest volcanic canyon, where a hike leads to the majestic Ófærufoss Waterfall.

The journey continues to Landmannalaugar, a highland oasis, offering opportunities to explore the unique Laugahraun lava field, hike to the colorful Mt. Brennisteinsalda, and relax in a natural geothermal pool.

The day concludes with a drive back to Reykjavík, stopping at the picturesque Hjálparfoss Waterfall in Þjórsárdalur Valley before reaching the city.

Day 5 – Vík – Skaftafell – Glacier Lagoon

The journey continues with an exploration of the striking Reynisfjara black sand beach, featuring the dramatic Reynisdrangar peaks and a captivating basalt column cave. Next, the focus shifts to the glaciers, passing by the magnificent Mýrdalsjökull Glacier, home to the powerful Katla Volcano.

Travelers will witness the remnants of past eruptions as they cross the Eldhraun lava field on the way to Skaftafell in Vatnajökull National Park. This verdant oasis, nestled in a stark black sand desert, boasts lush vegetation and green birch forests. Here, a three-hour glacier hike led by a specialist guide allows exploration of an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier.

The day culminates at the renowned Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, a mesmerizing sight filled with floating icebergs. A short walk leads to Diamond Beach, where glistening icebergs adorn the black sand, creating a cinematic landscape that has served as a backdrop for James Bond films and other movies.

Day 6 – East Fjords – Djúpivogur – Wilderness Center

Today’s adventure takes us to Iceland’s picturesque East Fjords. We’ll journey along the scenic coastline, navigating narrow roads around the beautiful Hvalnes peninsula and the dramatic Þvottárskriður landslides.

Our first stop is the charming fishing village of Djúpivogur, known for its outdoor sculpture, Eggin í Gleðivík (The Eggs of Merry Bay).

As the day concludes, we’ll arrive at the Wilderness Center, a haven for history and adventure in Northern Europe’s vast wilderness. Here, visitors can enjoy activities like hiking, biking, and horse riding, learn about Icelandic life at the museum, and unwind in cozy accommodations with delicious local food and a relaxing warm pool.

Day 7 – Stuðlagil Canyon – Mývatn – Goðafoss – Akureyri

Today’s journey takes us to the enchanting landscapes of North Iceland, starting with a drive from Egilsstaðir to the mesmerizing Stuðlagil Canyon, renowned for its captivating basalt rock formations.

Next, the mystical landscapes surrounding Lake Mývatn await, followed by the otherworldly geothermal wonders of Námaskarð, with its boiling hot springs, steaming fumaroles, and colorful mud pots. The surreal journey continues with a visit to the Dimmuborgir formations, also known as the Dark Castles.

For ultimate relaxation, the Mývatn Nature Baths, or “Blue Lagoon of the North,” offer a serene geothermal spa experience amidst the volcanic landscapes. (Optional)

The day concludes with a visit to the wide and majestic Goðafoss waterfall before venturing to the picturesque Eyjafjörður fjord, surrounded by towering mountains.

Day 8 – Whale watching in Dalvík – Siglufjörður -Tröllaskagi – Laugarbakki

Sometimes, there’s an opportunity for a brief stop in Akureyri, the charming “Capital of the North.” The route consistently passes through this town, offering mesmerizing views along Eyjafjörður (the Island Fjord) before reaching the quaint fishing town of Dalvík.

From Dalvík’s harbor, a 3-hour whale-watching boat trip sets sail, with potential sightings of humpback whales, white-beaked dolphins, minke whales, and even the occasional blue whale.

Back on land, the journey continues to Siglufjörður, a historic fishing village that once boomed as the herring fishing capital of the Atlantic in the early 20th century. The drive around Tröllaskagi (the Troll Peninsula) reveals stunning ocean views and renowned skiing areas, while the peninsula’s small villages offer a glimpse into life in remote Icelandic communities. The route then passes through thriving agricultural regions on the way to Laugarbakki.

Day 9 – Borgarfjörður – Reykholt – Hraunfossar – Hvalfjörður – Reykjavík

The day starts with a short hike up to Grábrók volcano crater, offering breathtaking views of the lava field and surrounding area on clear days. The focus then shifts to the many splendid sights of Borgarfjörður, including the powerful Deildartunguhver hot spring, the legendary Barnafoss waterfall (Children’s Waterfall), and the mesmerizing Hraunfossar cascade, where water emerges directly from the lava field.

The journey continues to the historic Reykholt, home of the renowned Icelandic figure Snorri Sturluson, a historian, lawyer, politician, poet, and author of Icelandic Sagas. Here, visitors can see Snorralaug, Snorri’s pool, and even feel the water’s temperature where he is said to have bathed.
