This is where the ancient Icelandic Parliament, Alþing, was established in 930 CE/AD, making it the world’s oldest ongoing democratic assembly. Marvel at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates diverge, creating a rugged gorge that likely provided a dramatic backdrop for historic parliamentary gatherings.
Next, venture to the Geysir geothermal area, home to the iconic Great Geysir. Witness the impressive displays of Strokkur, the most active hot spring, erupting with superheated water every few minutes. Surrounding the area are steaming fumaroles and hot springs adding to the otherworldly atmosphere.
Conclude the Golden Circle tour with a visit to the majestic Gullfoss waterfall, aptly named the “Golden Falls.” Feel the power of the Hvítá river as it cascades through two tiers, generating golden-toned mists. Hvítá, meaning “White River,” originates from Langjökull, Iceland’s second largest glacier.
