Glacial Landscapes

Iceland boasts glaciers that cover approximately 11% of its territory, remaining snow-covered for most of the year. Our Iceland Snow Mobile tours operate on both the East and West sides of the country, featuring Vatnajökull and Langjökull, the two largest glaciers in Europe. Snowmobiling provides an unparalleled opportunity to appreciate the stunning vistas and serene atmosphere of these icy landscapes, creating a perfect playground for outdoor enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike.

Tour Options

At Tourism Iceland, we offer various snowmobiling experiences tailored to different interests and skill levels. One of our standout options includes a day tour, allowing participants to ride a snowmobile while exploring Iceland’s iconic Golden Circle. With one of our base camps conveniently located in the area, this tour encompasses key attractions such as Geysir, Gullfoss, and Þingvellir National Park, and is available year-round to accommodate both winter and summer travellers.

Ice Cave Adventure

One of our most popular tours combines snowmobiling with a visit to a remarkable natural ice cave within the Langjökull Glacier. This enchanting experience showcases the breathtaking power of nature and is available from November to April, as the ice cave is prone to melting during warmer months. Participants aged eight and older are welcome on all tours, but only those over 18 with a valid driving licence may operate the snowmobiles.

Seasonal Highlights

Snowmobile Ride Iceland is captivating year-round. Summer offers mild temperatures and extended daylight, particularly around June when the midnight sun enhances exploration opportunities. In contrast, winter tours allow for a unique combination of snowmobiling and the chance to witness the enchanting Northern Lights.

A Typical Snowmobiling Tour

Journey to the Base Camp

Our tours commence at base camps situated at Langjökull and Vatnajökull. Participants may choose to be picked up by an experienced guide in Reykjavík via minibus or meet at designated locations, such as the Gullfoss Café, conveniently located beside the stunning Gullfoss Waterfall.

From Gullfoss Café, a specially designed Super Jeep will transport participants to the Langjökull base camp. This powerful vehicle, equipped with large wheels, can navigate terrains inaccessible to standard vehicles, adding another layer of excitement to your adventure. The base camp is approximately 40 minutes away, where participants will receive essential gear, including helmets, suits, and gloves. An experienced guide will provide safety instructions to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience.

The Ride

Once safety protocols are established, the exhilarating ride begins. Snowmobiling or Ski Mobile Iceland across a glacier offers breathtaking views of untouched nature. While navigating the fresh snow may be intimidating, trust in your guide’s expertise. After an hour of exploration, participants can enjoy hot drinks and cookies before returning to the Super Jeep for the journey back.

The History of Snowmobiling

The Snowmobile Reykjavík was invented by French-Canadian Joseph-Armand Bombardier in the early 20th century. Living in a remote area of Quebec, he sought to improve winter transportation, particularly after the tragic death of his young son due to medical inaccessibility during winter. His innovation evolved from early steam-powered machines to the sleek snowmobiles we know today. Snowmobiles played a significant role during World War II and became popularized in the 1950s with the introduction of the Ski-Doo. Today, they are celebrated for both recreational and competitive use, providing enjoyment and accessibility in snowy regions.

Safety Precautions

Our experienced team at Tourism Iceland prioritizes safety and enjoyment during Snowmobile Iceland Reykjavík tours. No previous experience is required, but drivers must be over 18 with a valid driving licence. Participants are expected to follow all safety instructions, including maintaining a single file behind the guide.

Provided Gear

We supply all necessary safety equipment, including overalls, gloves, helmets, and goggles. Participants should dress in layers and wear warm clothing and sturdy hiking boots. Although snowmobiles are equipped with heated handles, personal gear is essential for comfort. Please note your camera—photos can only be taken when off the Snowmobile Iceland, Reykjavík.

Vatnajökull Glacier

Vatnajökull is Europe’s largest glacier, covering approximately eight percent of Iceland’s landmass. As the centerpiece of Vatnajökull National Park, created in 2008, it offers various outdoor activities, including glacier hiking, boat tours, ice caving, and snowmobiling. The glacier spans 8,100 square kilometers and is home to the tallest peak in Iceland, Hvannadalshnjúkur, which rises 2,200 meters above sea level.

Langjökull Glacier

Langjökull, meaning “The Long Glacier,” is Iceland’s second-largest glacier, covering 953 square kilometers. With a thick ice sheet reaching up to 500 meters, it is a prime location for snowmobiling tours. Compared to other glaciers, Langjökull is relatively volcanically quiet, featuring several ice-filled craters and expansive snowfields.

Ice Caves

Every winter, our skilled glacier guides at Tourism Iceland discover new natural ice caves. This year, we unearthed a stunning jewel-blue ice cave at Langjökull, complete with a brilliant blue river flowing beneath a translucent ice ceiling. The unique white and gray striped patterns surrounding the river are the result of volcanic eruptions layering ash in the ice, making this cave a truly magical experience for all visitors.
